Of Cash Management</a></h3>

<p>Cash Management and Liquidity services advance with technology.
Gone are the days of basic accounts, payables and receivables
services. Smart Cash Management technology has been able to span
all regions, virtualise operational structures, automate
reconciliation, reduce bank fees and, for some, provide new
customer revenues.</p>

<p>When looking for words to describe our culture we looked
inwardly at the&nbsp;core values we saw every day in our team. We
then set two evaluation criteria;</p>

<ul>
<li>Is it really important inside our organisation?</li>

<li>If we were penalised for it (ie, it would cost us a deal) would
we still keep it?</li>
</ul>

<p>I must admit, we didn't think this up ourselves. These ideas
come from a Harvard Business Review article - Building Your
Company's Vision by James Collins and Jerry Porras. Well worth a
read.</p>

<p>We reviewed our initial list and&nbsp;agreed the following would
best represent our values and allow us to drive the culture of the
company;</p>

<p><strong>Respect for others, their abilities and
ideas</strong></p>

<p>It is all too easy these days to become insular, ignore others,
place unrealistic demands on unskilled people, ignore good ideas
because you don't want to change. This core value was designed to
show that we believe everyone has their value and needs to be
respected.</p>

<p><strong>Open and proactive</strong></p>

<p>A simple core value that means we do not believe in covering up,
being deceptive or telling half-truths. We take a very open
approach to all our interactions and have a desire to be proactive
at all times on all issues.</p>

<p><strong>Continuous Improvement</strong></p>

<p>A fairly standard value but quite often ignored due to ongoing
business pressures. We insist on reviewing all our projects,
services&nbsp;and deals to ensure we learn from them and continue
to improve everything we do.</p>

<p><strong>Take responsibility and move forward</strong></p>

<p>Blame is easy but worthless. Some people deny responsibility,
become dishonest and even quit. Taking responsibility and admitting
mistakes allows everyone to move forward, resolve issues and feed
back into the Continuous Improvement process.</p>

<p>&nbsp;</p>

<p>Our core values will drive our culture. We are reviewed against
these values and look for feedback from our customers on our
performance against these values. We continue to develop our
working culture based on these values and look for examples of our
values in action.</p>

<p>In the world of enterprise software development, design patterns
are often touted as a panacea to cure all architecture ills. And
let's face it, as developers we love to use whatever Hot New
Thing&nbsp;all the other cool kids&nbsp;are using.</p>

<p>But what exactly is a design pattern and where do they come
from? In 1977 an architect (a "real" architect - the buildings
kind) called Christopher Alexander wrote a book called <em>A
Pattern Language: Towns, Buildings, Construction</em> which
describes a bunch of recurring&nbsp;elements, or "patterns"&nbsp;in
traditional architecture.</p>

<p>Then in 1994 a group of software engineers, the "Gang of Four",
adapted his central idea of recurring patterns and applied it to
software engineering.&nbsp;They&nbsp;wrote a
book&nbsp;(<span><span><em>Design Patterns: Elements of Reusable
Object-Oriented Software</em>) which describes 23 classic software
patterns.</span></span></p>

<p><span><span>The great and powerful thing about design patterns
is that they give us a&nbsp;shared language to discuss some fairly
abstract ideas and solutions to common problems.</span></span>
<span><span>Unfortunately, the term "design pattern" is now used to
describe just about every aspect of software development. Google
"design patterns" and you'll see what I mean.</span></span></p>

<p><span><span>As professional developers, it's our responsibility
to manage the complexity of the applications we create. Design
patterns can be a useful tool to accomplish this goal, but they can
also be a&nbsp;source of&nbsp;complexity for its own
sake.</span></span> The trick is knowing which situation is
which.</p>

<p>Simbient is an award-winning custom development software
(system) engineering company servicing organisations in Australia
and Asia Pacific. The company's formative years were based on
software development.</p>

<p>An important aspect of software development is to understand the
needs of the customer. In order to be able to understand the needs
of customers we have worked hard on understanding their businesses.
This has allowed us to provide customers with sound advice
(consulting) around technology.</p>

<p>The types of things we do for customers include:</p>

<ul>
<li>Assisting in the evaluation process for a buy or build
decision.</li>

<p>Simbient is an award-winning custom development software
(system) engineering company servicing organisations in Australia
and Asia Pacific. The company's formative years were based on
software development and while things have evolved over the years
we are at the core, software engineers. This background has helped
in the multitude of projects we have worked on.</p>

<p>From integrations, to migrations, to ground up builds of
websites and forms applications, we have been involved all types of
solutions and while we are happy to build from the ground up we're
not slaves to the approach. In many instances when talking to
customers about solutions we may come to the realisation that a
custom (bespoke) solution is not the way to proceed. Our approach,
in this instance, is to recommend the correct approach.</p>

<p>Our focus is on ensuring we follow a structured, well known,
transparent, project methodology for all projects. We include all
the appropriate software development lifecycle phases and are
pragmatic and practical. This way we can guarantee the successful
delivery of any project we are involved in.</p>

<p>With trends in technology seemingly around mobile application
development and software as a service we have begun working more to
deliver business quality solutions that are available to mobile
devices and software that can be used by large numbers of users in
many locations. Our belief is that technology will continue to
improve in this area and our aim is be at the forefront of
delivering solutions in this space.</p>

<p>As a Microsoft Gold Partner a lot of the work we do is in this
technology stack but given the background of the organisation and
the people, we have worked on a number of other technologies
including Java, Delphi, Oracle, and some open source
technologies.</p>

<div>Lumley Insurance were using their internally created core
application to keep track of their intermediary and client
contacts. The system while great for managing all that is
associated with insurance policies was not ideally suited to cater
for detailed customer relationship information.<br />
<br />
 The problems with not having a customer relationship management
(CRM) system meant the organisation could not effectively manage
customer relationships. Additionally any pseudo system was a
standalone silo with no interfaces to any other systems within the
organisation.</div>

<p>Simbient was engaged by Lumley from a very early stage to assist
in defining the scope and gathering requirements. Simbient's
background in consulting, technology and project management along
with intimate knowledge of the scope and requirements meant it was
ideally placed to complete the installation, configuration, build,
test and implementation for the project.</p>

<p>The solution was to implement a CRM which would enable the
business to:</p>

<ul>
<li>Better manage customer relationships</li>

<li>Proactively market to the customer database</li>

<li>Provide a platform which could interface with other core
systems</li>

<li>Increase staff productivity</li>
</ul>

<p>The benefit of implementing a CRM solution was to:</p>

<ul>
<li>Enable the business to better manage relationships</li>

<li>Increase the productivity of staff</li>
</ul>

<p>The solution incorporated the following technological
componements:</p>

<ul>
<li>Microsoft Windows Server 2003</li>

<li>Microsoft CRM 4.0</li>

<li>Microsoft SQL Server 2005</li>

<li>Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Services 2005</li>

<li>Microsoft ASP.Net 2.0</li>
